Back and Neck Pain Conditions
Back and Neck Pain Conditions
Some of the most complex structures in the body are in the back and neck, involving many small bones in the spine, large and small muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. The spine offers the right amount of rigidity and support for standing and performing other activities, while facet joints enable an amazing amount of flexibility. When the back or neck experiences any discomfort or is painful, it makes it difficult to complete even simple tasks.
Annular Disc Tear
An annular disc tear is a small rupture in a spinal disc’s outer layer, causing back or neck pain that may worsen with movement. Treatment focuses on relieving pain and restoring mobility.
Cervical Spondylosis
Normal wear and tear on the spinal discs occurs as we age, leading to a condition called spondylosis. This can develop in any part of the spine.
Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative disc disease is a leading cause of back pain. As we age, the discs between our vertebrae gradually wear down and lose their flexibility and cushioning ability.
Discogenic Back Pain
Discogenic back pain is a condition caused by damage or degeneration of the discs in the spine. These discs act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) in your spine.
Facet Syndrome
Facet syndrome refers to a condition that affects the small joints at the back of the spine, known as facet joints. This condition is often associated with lower back pain.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a long-term disorder marked by persistent, widespread pain and sensitivity in multiple areas of the body for at least three months.
Herniated Disk
A herniated disc is a spinal condition that can lead to back pain, as well as numbness or tingling sensations that radiate down one or both legs.
Muscle Strains
Muscles are soft tissues made up of thousands of stretchy fibers grouped together and covered by a thin layer.
Musculoskeletal Pain
Musculoskeletal pain is a widespread issue with a variety of underlying causes, which can make it challenging for doctors to pinpoint the exact source.
Myelopathy
Myelopathy refers to an injury or dysfunction of the spinal cord, typically caused by significant compression or narrowing.
Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)
Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a long-lasting condition marked by discomfort or pain in the soft tissues that surround muscles.
Osteoporosis
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, nearly 10 million Americans have the condition, while another 44 million have low bone density, increasing their risk of developing osteoporosis.
Pinched Spinal Nerve
A pinched spinal nerve is a condition that can lead to pain in the neck, shoulders, arms, or upper body.
Postlaminectomy Syndrome
Spinal surgeries are commonly performed to correct structural problems or other issues that cause back pain.
Scheuermann’s Disease (Kyphosis)
Scheuermann’s disease is a spinal condition that causes an excessive forward curve of the upper back, giving it a hunched appearance.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis refers to an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It most often begins during the growth spurt that occurs just before puberty, but it can also develop in younger children or later in adulthood.
Spinal Osteoarthritis
Cartilage is a flexible, smooth tissue that cushions the joints and helps them move easily.
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a condition characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal, which can lead to nerve compression and result in pain or discomfort.
Back and Neck Pain: Causes, Symptoms, and When to Seek Care
The back and neck are some of the most complex structures in the body, made up of small spinal bones, large and small muscles, ligaments, tendons, and nerves. The spine provides strength and stability for standing and daily activities, while facet joints allow remarkable flexibility. When the back or neck is painful, even simple tasks can become difficult.
Symptoms of Neck Pain
Pain is often the first sign that something is wrong. Neck pain can vary in intensity (mild, moderate, severe) and duration. Common symptoms include:
- Muscle stiffness, limiting movement of the neck and head
- Shooting pain down the spine or into the shoulders and arms
- Dull, persistent aching in the neck
- Frequent or chronic headaches
- Tingling or numbness in the neck area
When to See a Doctor
Many people hope back or neck pain will improve on its own, but certain symptoms require prompt medical attention. See a physician if:
- Pain lasts more than three weeks
- Pain is severe or prevents normal activities
- Loss of bowel or bladder control occurs, or leg weakness develops
- Pain gradually worsens over time
- Pain is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, swelling, or fever
- Pain follows an accident or injury
Consult a Physician
Any pain in the back or neck should be taken seriously. Because of its complex structure, the spine is prone to a variety of medical conditions. There is no reason to live with chronic pain when expert help is available.
