Bursitis

Bursitis may inflame your joints, but with targeted care and rest, comfort and smooth movement can be restored.

Bursitis – What Is It?

Bursitis refers to the inflammation of a bursa, a small, fluid-filled sac found in the musculoskeletal system. These sacs act as cushions between bones, tendons, and ligaments, reducing friction and preventing injury during movement. Since bursae are present throughout the body, bursitis can develop in many areas. However, it most frequently occurs at the greater trochanter—a prominent bone on the outer side of the thighbone (femur).

Symptoms of Bursitis

Bursitis typically causes pain that may be sharp, burning, or aching in nature. This discomfort often stems from repetitive use of a joint or body part. Movements that aggravate the affected area may become painful, and in more severe cases, even slight pressure—like touching the area—can cause significant pain. Activities such as walking, running, or climbing stairs may also worsen symptoms. That said, the specific symptoms can vary depending on the location of the inflamed bursa.

Common Causes

The most frequent cause of bursitis is repetitive motion or overuse, whether from work, athletic activity, or even improper walking patterns or cane use. It’s important to be aware that bursitis can also be associated with systemic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout, so a thorough medical evaluation is advised.

Treatment Options

Before beginning treatment, it’s important to see a healthcare provider—ideally a pain specialist—for a proper diagnosis. Once bursitis is confirmed, management usually involves avoiding the movements that worsen the pain. This might mean adjusting your gait or taking a break from certain activities. Other helpful measures include applying ice, participating in physical therapy, and taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

If these conservative treatments don’t relieve your symptoms, your doctor may suggest injection therapy, which involves injecting a steroid and local anesthetic directly into the bursa. This approach often leads to significant pain relief.

Additional Treatment Options May Include:

Trigger point injections

Diagnostic evaluations with a pain specialist
