Facet Syndrome
What is Facet Syndrome
Facet syndrome refers to a condition that affects the small joints at the back of the spine, known as facet joints. This condition is often associated with lower back pain. To better understand facet syndrome, it helps to know a bit about spinal structure. Each section of the spine is made up of three main parts: a large disc in the front and two facet joints in the back. These three parts function together to support your body and maintain spinal stability.
With regular movements—like bending, twisting, and lifting—the facet joints undergo repeated stress and friction. Over time, this can lead to joint damage, making them stiff or restricted, and can result in significant discomfort.
What Causes Facet Syndrome?
As with other joints in the body, facet joints can degenerate with age and use. The cartilage lining the joints can gradually wear down, becoming thinner. When this happens, the bones in the spine may begin to rub directly against each other due to reduced cushioning. This can trigger inflammation, swelling, and persistent pain.
Symptoms of Facet Syndrome
Facet syndrome describes pain that originates from the inflamed facet joints. Common symptoms include stiffness, soreness, and discomfort in the lower back. Pain often worsens with backward bending or after long periods of sitting or standing. Many people report that symptoms are more intense in the morning and tend to ease up with movement as the day goes on.
Treatment Options for Facet Syndrome
Initial treatment often involves anti-inflammatory medications to reduce pain and swelling. Physical therapy is usually recommended alongside medication to strengthen the muscles of the back and abdomen, which helps reduce pressure on the facet joints and supports the spine.
If conservative treatments don’t provide enough relief, more advanced methods such as facet joint injections may be considered. These involve injecting a combination of a local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medication directly into the problematic joint to help reduce pain and inflammation.
