Leg and Foot Pain: Causes, Symptoms, and When to See a Doctor
Leg and foot pain can range from minor overuse injuries to more serious conditions like lower back problems. Pain can affect mobility and daily activities.
Common Causes of Leg and Foot Pain
Pain in the leg or foot may originate locally or from another part of the body. It can be mild or severe, intermittent or persistent. Some common causes include:
- Overuse injuries: bursitis, stress fractures, muscle tears, shin splints, plantar fasciitis
- Muscle cramps or spasms
- Sprains and strains
- Bone, spine, or vascular diseases
- Age-related tissue deterioration
- Accidents or injuries
- Fractures from trauma or osteoporosis
- Inflammation or infection
- Genetic factors
Common Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the underlying cause but may include:
- Localized or radiating pain
- Leg weakness or limping
- Foot numbness, tingling, or prickling sensations
- Sharp, burning, or stabbing pain
- Increased sensitivity to touch
- Difficulty walking or standing
- Pain that worsens or improves with certain positions
- Bones that fracture easily
Peripheral neuropathy refers to numbness in the legs or feet, most commonly caused by diabetes. High blood sugar can damage nerves, leading to tingling, numbness, or pain. Other causes include infections or compressed nerves.
Some patients experience neuropathic pain, which may begin in the lower back or upper thigh and radiate down the leg. This pain is often severe, stabbing, or persistent, with intermittent numbness or weakness.
When to See a Doctor
Leg or foot pain that is sharp, constant, or interfering with daily life should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Chronic pain is defined as lasting more than three to six months, and timely treatment can prevent worsening symptoms.
Seek medical attention immediately if you experience:
- Pain that does not improve after a few days of self-care
- Pain that makes walking difficult or occurs after minimal activity
- Numbness in the legs or feet
- Swelling in one or both legs or feet
- Shortness of breath along with leg or foot pain
- Signs of infection: redness, tenderness, or fever over 100°F
- Pain that progressively worsens
Early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms, prevent complications, and restore mobility and quality of life.
