Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)

Myofascial pain may tighten your body, but it can’t hold back your spirit—healing begins when hope meets movement.

Understanding Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)

Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a long-lasting condition marked by discomfort or pain in the soft tissues that surround muscles. This syndrome can affect a single muscle or multiple muscles and can range from mild to severe. In some cases, individuals may experience referred pain, which means the pain is felt in a different area of the body than where the actual problem is located.

Causes of Myofascial Pain Syndrome

MPS may develop due to direct injury or overuse of muscles, tendons, or ligaments. Contributing factors include:

  • Damage to intervertebral discs
  • Physical exhaustion or fatigue
  • Repetitive movements or strain

Underlying health issues like depression, gastrointestinal problems, or even a heart attack.

Symptoms

People with MPS often report trigger points—specific sensitive spots that cause pain when pressed. The pain can intensify during times of physical activity or emotional stress. In addition to muscle pain, some individuals may experience fatigue, depression, and other psychological symptoms.

Treatment Options

The most commonly recommended treatment is physical therapy, which can help improve muscle function and reduce pain. Some people find relief from cold sprays followed by stretching exercises. Massage therapy has also proven beneficial for many. In cases where these treatments are not effective, injections with anesthetic medications may help relieve pain. Many patients benefit from a combination of these methods for optimal pain management.
