Specialty Pain Management Treating Your Pain

Occipital Neuralgia

Occipital neuralgia may strike with sharp pain, but it cannot diminish your courage or will to heal.

Understanding Occipital Neuralgia

Neuralgia refers to nerve pain resulting from irritation or damage to a nerve. Occipital neuralgia is a specific type of neuralgia that affects the occipital nerves, which are located where the skull meets the upper neck. When these nerves become inflamed or injured, they can cause intense pain.

These nerves travel from the base of the skull up along both sides of the head. The pain is often concentrated at the back of the head and behind the eyes, but it can also extend across the scalp and down into the neck. Typically, this pain does not affect the face or ears.

Because the symptoms of occipital neuralgia can resemble those of migraines or tension headaches, they are sometimes misdiagnosed or overlooked. However, the treatment for occipital neuralgia differs from that of migraines or other headache types, so getting the correct diagnosis is essential. It is important to consult a healthcare professional if you experience these symptoms, as proper treatment and management require medical expertise.

Common Symptoms

Neck pain: Sharp or intense pain that begins at the base of the skull.

Pain behind the eye(s): May include sensitivity to light.

Head/Scalp pain: General tenderness or pain across the scalp, often sensitive to touch.

Severe pain: Can feel like shooting, electric, aching, throbbing, or burning sensations.

Possible Causes

Occipital neuralgia can be triggered by various conditions, including:

  • Muscle tension in the neck
  • Whiplash injury
  • Pinched nerves
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cervical disc disorders
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Gout
  • Diabetes
  • Infections

In some instances, no specific cause can be identified.

Treatment Options

Management of occipital neuralgia may involve:

  • Pain-relieving medications
  • Nerve blocks
  • Physical therapy
  • Occipital nerve stimulation

In more severe or persistent cases, surgical treatment might be considered. Treatment approaches vary depending on the individual, so it is important to work with your healthcare provider to find the most effective solution.

Additional Treatment Possibilities:

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
