Facet Joint Injection
Facet Joint Injection
Your spine is made up of vertebrae, which are connected at the front by discs and at the back by small joints called facet joints. Each level of the spine has two facet joints—one on each side—that help stabilize the spine and allow smooth movement.
Facet joint injections are used to both diagnose and treat back or neck pain caused by issues in these joints, such as arthritis, wear and tear (degeneration), joint swelling (edema), or joint enlargement (hypertrophy).
Facet joints are named based on their location in the spine:
- Cervical (neck)
- Thoracic (upper/mid-back)
- Lumbar (lower back) – the most common area for facet joint injections
How Does a Facet Joint Injection Work?
Using X-ray guidance for precision and safety, a doctor cleans the area and applies a local anesthetic to numb the skin. Then, a needle is inserted into the facet joint, where a steroid medication is injected to reduce inflammation. After the injection, the needle is removed and the site is covered with a clean bandage.
How Often Can You Get This Injection?
Facet joint injections can typically be done every three to six months. However, many patients feel significant relief after just one or two treatments.
What Results Can You Expect?
These injections have been used successfully for many years. Some patients may feel mild soreness a few hours after the procedure. Most people rest the day of the injection and return to normal activities by the next day. Pain relief usually begins within two to three days.
Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?
While facet joint injections are generally safe, minor side effects like soreness at the injection site can occur. Rare side effects include:
- Headache
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Allergic reactions
- Nerve injury
- Steroids used in the injection may also cause:
- Changes in blood sugar
- Temporary weight gain
- Water retention
- Sweating
- Heart palpitations
