Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
What Is Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive medical procedure that uses controlled radiofrequency energy to heat and destroy targeted tissue. This technique interrupts pain signals, shrinks problematic tissue, or treats abnormal cells—depending on the condition being treated.
-
- RFA is commonly used for:
- Chronic back or neck pain
- Nerve pain (facet joint or sacroiliac joint pain)
- Varicose veins
- Tumors and certain cancers
- Heart rhythm conditions (cardiac ablation)
Because it requires only a small incision or needle insertion, RFA offers a quicker recovery and fewer complications compared with traditional surgery.
How Is RFA Performed?
The RFA procedure typically takes 30–90 minutes and is done on an outpatient basis. While steps vary by condition, the general process includes:
- Preparation
The area is cleaned and numbed using a local anesthetic. Sedation may be offered for comfort. - Guided Needle Placement
The doctor uses ultrasound, fluoroscopy (X-ray), or CT guidance to precisely position a thin needle near the targeted nerve or tissue. - Energy Delivery
A small electrical current creates heat at the tip of the needle.
This heat disrupts nerve function or destroys unwanted tissue without harming surrounding areas. - Completion
The needle is removed, and a small bandage is applied. Stitches are rarely necessary.
Patients can typically go home the same day.
What Is the Recovery Time After Radiofrequency Ablation?
Recovery from RFA is generally fast. Most patients:
- Return to normal light activity within 24–48 hours
- Experience full therapeutic effect within 1–3 weeks, especially for nerve pain procedures
- Resume work and exercise gradually based on their doctor’s advice
Mild soreness or swelling at the treatment site is normal and usually resolves within a few days.
Side Effects and Risks of RFA
Radiofrequency Ablation is considered very safe, but like all medical procedures, it carries some potential risks. Common side effects include:
Common, Mild Side Effects
Temporary soreness or bruising
Mild swelling or numbness
Tingling or “sunburn-like” sensation
Fatigue for 1–2 days
Less Common Risks
Infection at the injection site
Minor bleeding
Temporary nerve irritation
Allergic reaction to medications
In rare cases, persistent numbness or nerve damage
Your provider will review your medical history to ensure RFA is safe and appropriate for your condition.
Is RFA Right for You?
Radiofrequency Ablation is an excellent option for patients who want effective, long-lasting relief without major surgery. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, problematic tissue, or vascular issues, RFA may provide a minimally invasive solution with fast recovery and minimal downtime.
