Specialty Pain Management Treating Your Pain

Sacroiliac Joint Injections

Sacroiliac joint injections provide targeted relief for lower back and hip pain, helping restore stability, reduce inflammation, and improve daily movement.

Sacroiliac Joint Injections

A sacroiliac (SI) joint injection is a medical procedure designed to relieve pain in the lower back, hips, and buttocks. The SI joints connect the base of your spine to your pelvis and play a key role in supporting your lower body. Over time, or due to injury, these joints can become inflamed, leading to discomfort. This injection delivers two types of medication into the affected joint: a local anesthetic to numb the area and a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation and ease the pain.

How Is the Procedure Done?

You’ll lie face-down on an exam table for the procedure. The skin over the treatment area will be cleaned and covered with a sterile drape to reduce the risk of infection. A local anesthetic will be given first to numb the skin. Then, using a special type of X-ray (fluoroscopy) for guidance, your doctor will inject both the numbing agent and the steroid directly into the SI joint. A contrast dye is also used to help highlight the joint on the X-ray images. You may feel some pressure during the injection. The entire process typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes.

Possible Side Effects

SI joint injections are generally safe. The most common side effect is tenderness or soreness at the injection site, which usually goes away once the steroid takes effect. Some people may also experience temporary numbness in their leg due to the local anesthetic, which can make walking difficult for a few hours afterward.

When Will I Notice Pain Relief?

The local anesthetic may provide immediate pain relief, but this will typically wear off within 3 to 4 hours. After that, some discomfort may return until the steroid starts working—this can take up to two weeks for full effect.

Potential Conditions

Sacroiliac joint injections are commonly used to diagnose and treat sacroiliac joint dysfunction, a condition that can cause chronic pain in the lower back and pelvic area.

Our Mission is to guide our patients along a path of optimal health by delivering the highest possible level of care in a friendly, safe, and comfortable environment.
